Description:
Organization: NOAA-Northern Gulf Institute
The NOAA-NGI Diversity Internship Program provides an exciting scientific
educational opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students. This program
provides career exploration in a variety of fields studied by National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Northern Gulf Institute (NGI)
scientists including coastal science, fisheries management, climate change,
ecosystem management and socio-economic data analysis. Interns work with leading
scientists and experts at their respective research institutions and
laboratories located throughout the Gulf of Mexico region. Past research
projects have included studying seafood safety, sampling seagrass beds,
monitoring harmful algal blooms, sampling fishery populations, cataloging
archival visual imagery, processing hydrologic data, conducting environmental
simulations using GIS and managing scientific data.

This 10-week summer internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students
currently enrolled in a degree-granting program. There is an emphasis on
students from communities and institutions in the northern Gulf of Mexico
region, and the program specifically targets populations underrepresented in the
NOAA workforce. Interns will receive a stipend to help cover living expenses and
travel. Stipends range from $11 to $15 per hour varying with education level.
Interns are expected to attend an orientation session in May as well as an
Internship Summit at the conclusion of the program in early August. Finding
living accommodations and daily transportation to and from work are the
responsibility of the intern.
