Type of Event: Course, International

Description:

High speed pumps are not only important for cryogenic propulsion but also experience a growing interest for a wide range of more industrial applications. Although in use since long time, a large amount of research is still going on to improve the performance, operating range and reliability. Stationary and instationary operations are still challenging aspects of pump design and operation. The objective of this special course is to review the state of the art on: optimum design methods for impellers and return channels, including tip clearance effects and casing treatment; performance prediction related to the NPSH over the entire operating range; stationary and unsteady cavitation and their relation to synchronous and asynchronous vibrations; start up and stop; interaction of pump with the fluid circuit and inlet distortion; thermal effects due to cryogenic fluids. Advanced numerical simulations as well as non-intrusive experimental techniques and embarked pressure transducers measurements will be presented. (RTO-AVT-VKI Lecture Series)
