Problem with meshing half NACA0009 in 3D

Hello!

I have a huge problem with meshing half NACA0009 profile fin. Previously I have done meshing only in 2D and now I face a problem with doing mesh in 3D. I done tetra mesh and tried to import it to Fluent, but with no result. There was an error message "Segmentation Voliation". I`m dealing with this problem for one week. If anybody could give me some hints or an advice, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

Can attach a ICEM project?

Eizo May 16, 2012 08:21

Yes, of course. This is only test one, so the mesh is very coarse. Here it is:

This is only project file without geometry (*.tin) and blocking (*.blk). ;)

As I said, I`m new here and I read that you would like to see the project :o .

It's not so simple as in 2D. A similar example in the topic naca0012. I was just trying to mesh.

I know that. As I said, I stuck in this point and I can`t go forward :( ...

attach .tin file

That's one of the variants of the mesh.

Thank you very much for that. Can you give me some explanation how you done that? I see some blockin, but I have only rough idea what`s going on there. Thank you in advance.

Best regards

5 Attachment(s)
1. Create 3D Block and split it as shown in pictures 1 & 2.
2. Create O-grid for area around wing as shown in picture 3.
3. Create O-grid for area inside wing as shown in picture 4.
4. Merge all vertices in thin blocks except six inside wing as shown in picture 5.

5 Attachment(s)
5. Associate & move vertices as shown in pictures 6 & 7
6. Remove six blocks inside wing as shown in picture 8.
7. Associate faces of the wing to the surfaces of the wing ("FIN") as shown in picture 9
8. Align vertices along the z axis. Move vertices as shown in picture 10

9. Set the size for the mesh. (I use the global size 20 and 2 for the curves of the wing). Move the vertices to improve a quality!

Well done :)

Ralen May 21, 2012 05:55

You can also create the o-grid block along the axis Y before merge vertices.

Eizo May 22, 2012 05:22

Thank you for that Ralen, that was very helpful. You are the man :)

I now doing 3D mesh for two fins, which are canted and toed in. In near future I`m going to do the mesh for 3 fins. I meet problems with assigning inner vertices (FIN1.png) to surface of the fin (FIN2.png). When I`m doing premesh, the software screams so error, and the mesh don`t have shape of the geometry.
