Problem with merging volumes(plz help)

I am a beginner...sorry, if the question is too basic

am trying to create a cylinder with external fins.for creating the base of the fin i made an edge from the two vertices in the pic and made a face(the fin base) by revolving the edge.Now when I try to unite the two volumes i get an error message saying that the volumes are not connected.

Plz help.I am struck:confused:

did you try to unite or merge?
can you post picture with cylinder and fin?
