[ICEM] Delete angled cylinder inside a block

Hi all,

I would like to arrange the block of a 3d model in such a way in order to mesh around two inclined holes (representing tube inserts) inside it. By the term remove i mean that the inner of these tubings will have no solid or fluid... This must be pretty easy to do but I am not a mesher so my knowledge is very limited. I understand that the block must be split around the cylinders but how do you do that at a specified angle?

I have attached a zip file with all files required for the ICEM software.. There is also a picture attached in case you dont want to go into too much fuzz..

Any help would be very helpful for me to get an idea of how to deal with such problems.

Ali,

thanks for the reply.. maybe i wasnt clear with what i was looking for. this why i edited the original post now. anyway i didnt mean to remove the holes from the geometry and mesh it as whole body, as if these holes never existed.. i meant to add these inclined holes in the final model. please help if you can.

He is asking for blocking for the inside two small pipes. It is difficult with the fact the pipes are inclined and has shape change from circular to ellipse instead of rectangle shape.

broly, after a closer look to the geometry, i don't think it's easy for a beginner to mesh this...

this is certainly not the basics of meshing... I am familiar with the basics of meshing and I am not asking to be spoon fed here.. As far as the tutorials are concerned there is absolutely no info on how to deal with such a geometry.. Please read b4 telling off..

Any ideas then for the rest of the guys?

Hello again,

I tried to edit and match the edges around the cylinder geometry and it was very very messy indeed. It is very hard and eye-painful to do because of the shape change from cylinder to ellipse and the end result is not good anyway.. I then tried using a local coordinate system to create inclined blocking but it does not appear to work. The block split is being performed at the global coordinate system..


How does one activate the local coordinate system so that they can do blocking with respect to it?

Also do you think that such an approach would be suitable for this problem? Is there any other way to create blocks at a specified angle?

To create blocks at a specific position of an edge, i always create a point at the edge. The position of the point with respect to the edge length can be specified directly.
Afterwards, you can split the blocks at the point.

Anyway, I think this geometry is not suitable to create a block-structured mesh with a good quality because of the reasons already mentioned here.

Alex thanks for the reply,

I tried to do that, i.e. projecting points of cylinder geom to edges, so that my blocking would be more tailored.. But it is not efficient. I am very surprised that there appears to be no clever way of dealing with such geom. It is only an inclined tube inside a 3d body after all.. >50% of designs have at least one of those.

Anyway, so what would your suggestion be? what kind of mesh should i try to generate if not block structured. Just give me a direction, no more.
