2d meshing in ansys meshing

Hi,
I am trying to import a 2d geometry into Ansys meshing. but there always seems to be some sort of error. I've switched the model type from 3d to 2d in workbench but this is of no use. What kind of 2d files does ansys meshing support? am i even allowed to mesh in 2d in ansys meshing in the first place?

yes, you can mesh 2D geometry in ANSYS Meshing...

Is you geometry in the XY plane (Z = 0)?

how did you import the geometry?

Hi Simon,
I imported it directly from Solidworks. Solidworks has this addin for ANSYS 13. I can click on it and it will bring the drawing to workbench designmodeller geometry automatically. I was able to import a 3d part drawing from Solidworks but when it comes to 2d, the attachment always gives an error. My geometry is in the XY plane and yes Z=0. Do you have any suggestions?

I just checked with development... They are not aware of any issues with 2D from Solidworks. They have regression tests in place and those are all fine.

Are you talking about a 2D model or just a sketch?

Is it possible that you have some variance from the Z=0 plane?

i have this problem as well, can anyone shed some light on what sort of model can be imported from solidworks for 2D analysis in ansys?

I tried a simple extrued airfoil and it gave errors when switching from 3d to 2d.

are you trying to insert only a sketch if you are doing this, create a surface inside the sketch then try it again.

what do you mean by surface? I was trying to insert a 3D part (has features not just sketches) into fluent, and do a 2d analysis.

i was thinking that you are already inputting 2-d geometry and DM did not response . I am sorry about misunderstanding...

so then there cant be any features, it imports sketches?
in what format does it like?

I remember in the past I was using the import features from solidworks with the plug-in features mentioned and also via various file formats such as IGES or Parasolid.

In order to avoid any errors with geometry and meshing I have decided to move to DesignModeller for most of my simple geometries. It saves so much time especially when undertaking a iterative design or optimisation study. Unless the geometry is complicated or represents some assembly which is used elsewhere, by members of a larger team for example, I have found it much better to just use DesignModeller to produce all the CFD geometry.

Just my $0.02.
