freezing bodies

I have a geometry that was created using GAMBIT and unfortunately I can't use GAMBIT anymore, therefore, I imported this geometry to designmodeler to do some changes and edit it.
One of the changes is to create small cylinders inside a very big one (which is the whole geometry) but I can't do that as the designmodeler gives me non-manifold bodies error when I'm trying to add any type of material. The only way that I can do to add those small cylinders is to add them as freezing bodies, but when I unfreeze them I get an error message related to non-manifold bodies again.
My question: can I keep my geometry as some of them freezed and some of them active and complete my work (i.e. the meshing and the simulation), in which all bodies lie within the same part.

I think it is complaining about your original geometry... Does it need to be sewn up? Does it show as a solid or a collection of surfaces?

yahya November 30, 2012 16:35

How i can know if it needs to be sewn up?
It appreas as a collection of parts and each part is a collection of volumes (bodies)
I'm so cofused why its not accepting any commnd to add materials even if its outside the geometry
I wonder that no one here knows the answer!!!

share some pictures, I'm not sure i understand what's your intentions. may be you are trying operations between solid and surface, which is not possible... i can help...

PSYMN November 30, 2012 16:46

It you are seeing solid bodies, then you don't need anything sewn up... That was just my first guess. I have never had a "non-manifold" error. In meshing, a non-manifold surface node is one that is connected to more than one set of surface nodes (a manifold node is connected to just one ring of surface nodes around it).

It is hard to guess what may be wrong when we have never had that problem and you have not really given us a look at the model...

Perhaps if you contacted ANSYS tech support and gave them your error message, they could tell you how to solve the problem right away.

I will post pictures of the model in 5 min
Note that my problem is not in the meshing its in the geometry itself
I cant add any type of materials shape

Note that in this picures the model is iluustrated to the left of the picture
and I'm required to create some solids inside it, however, I got that error
what the picutre is showing also, is that Im trying to create anything away from the model as well (at the axis plane shown in the picture) but the error is still the same !!!!
please guys I need help urgently

adding a solid is done with the fill operation have you done that. to ways of doing the "fill":
Bys caps or cavity. if you want by caps, you need to close all the holes and then select the bodies where you want the fills to be.

yahya November 30, 2012 17:17

I have not done these operations.
I want your final judgment of this photo which shows exactly what I want to do. I want to extrude these circles...thats it :(((((

diamondx November 30, 2012 17:30

you to extrude those circles...
there is a lot of possibilities:
you need a sketch there. insert a new plane, using "on face", then select that face on which the circle are.
Also there is a way to insert a sketch from a face, but for that you need a plane there. so create the plane.
After having on you circles sketched, you can extrude...

yahya November 30, 2012 17:35

well my dear Ali I'm not so newbie to designmodeler :)
I know all these ways, but the problem that I can't do it due to that error
"non-manifold bodies"
anyway thanks for your help and cooperation
I knew that this problem is not easy to be resolved

yahya November 30, 2012 17:37

The only way that I can do the extrusion is to do them as freezing materials. But i dont know if frozen bodies will work later in the meshing and simulation

PSYMN November 30, 2012 17:55

Yea, maybe my first guess was right. Those don't look like solid bodies. You will need to repair the geometry first...

yahya November 30, 2012 18:00

I think you are right because I just tried to delete all bodies and keep the only bodies that i want to work with
the command is executed but the some faces starting to unite in unexpected manner
but How i can repair the geometry??
