What causes negative determinants when checking quality? It seems that I get negative determinants in my pre-mesh but then when I load from blocking I can fix them with the mesh check...

There are many reasons for negative determinant. Sometimes mesh is al-right but vectors are not and fix is simply fix the determinant.

But mostly this is due to penetrating elements into geometry or other blocks due to wrong association or misaligned blocked. The solution may be simple in some cases and in other cases you may have to redo the whole blocking in more innovative way. But keep on trying you will come to know what is causing problem and how to fix it. Sometimes the problem is due to edge mesh parameters.
