Hello All,

I am attempting to create a tetrahedral volume mesh with prism elements in the b.l. region from a given set of surfaces that bound the flow domain. The surfaces have been triangulated a priori. The option to generate the prism layer is greyed out in the volume meshing window (enclosed image). I was wondering whether there might be a technique to circumvent this problem. Vis-à-vis would another mesh generator like T-Grid or Gambit be a better option.

The problem is you don't have any "Geometry" menu in your "model tree".
The normal model tree is like this:

therefore first generate geometry from mesh and then create parts and apply prism option.

when we import .msh file in ICEM(tetra mesh only), then how we can extract geometry from this file for applying prism layers? Can anybody tell me the detailed procedure please

As Far said:
Go to Edit menu and choose Mesh->Facets.
Although using TGrid instead of ICEM for generating prism would be fun!

I only know a bit about tgrid but haven't tested it even once, do tgrid offer any advantage over ICEM for prisms generation?

Because if you have .msh file, you can directly import it in TGrid and with no other modification grow the prism.
And I think TGrid prism is comparable with ICEM.(personal experience)

Dear All,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have opted to import the surface mesh into T-Grid and generate the volume mesh with prism layers and a tetrahedral core. I am currently reading the T-Grid mesh back into ICEM to scale and setup the problem for Fluent.

scaling can be done directly in Tgird or Fluent.
