how to create a 2d tri mesh with quad mesh in the boundary layer
 
Hi Guys:
I am a new user for icem. I want to create a 2D tri mesh with several quad mesh boundary layers. The domain consists of a building cross-section profile and a large surrounding atmosphere. I want to create the boundary layer on building exterior and interior walls. According to some threads, there are several ways to do it.
1. using 2d patch dependent method, and define inflation layers on all necessary curves. However, I found that the inflation layers can be created only when I defined the inflation layer parameters on all curves that create a close loop of a surface. If I just want to some curves of a loop growing the inflation layers, the surface mesher didn't work on this surface. Is there any problem in this procedure?
2. using 2d patch dependent method and activate Blayer 2d in advanced parameters setting, I can create the mesh. But once I run the prism mesher, no matter whether I click the Blayer 2d option or not, ICEM will always create a 3d prism mesh on the selected walls. The mesh consists of a 2d tri surface mesh and a 3d prism mesh on walls. Is there anyone having the experience of it.

Hi Jerry,

I'm also trying to do a prism layer on a 2D tri mesh. I see that there is not too much info about 2D unstructured mesh, only 2D hex mesh or 3D meshes.
I've also tried both approached with no results in any of them.

I guess it must be a closed curve to generate a prism layer around it, it won't work if it's not closed but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Can you add a picture of the 2d-3d mesh?
I'm also trying this approach but I don't even get the boundary layer. Can you describe the process in detail, please?

What I'm doing is the following:
1 - I've activated the BLayer2D option in the Global Mesh Setup.
2 - I've set the Volume meshing parameteres (Should I use surface mesh for a 2d case instead??)
3 - I've set the Global Prism Settings.
4 - I've set the surface mesh setup.
5 - I've set the Curve mesh setup.
6 - I've checked the prism layer mesh option in Compute mesh.
7 - I've selected the curves and surfaces for the prism layer in Compute mesh/prism mesh.
8 - I compute the mesh.
Result: no boundary is generated.

Have you followed the same steps?

Hi Jerry, I've been trying your 2nd approach and I've got the 3d prism layer you are talkig about. Also, after computing the prism layer, some of the shell elements have disappeared and some other are in the wrong plane.
I attach pictures of the initial mesh, before computing the prism layer.
Picture 2 is after the prism layer, showing the wrong shell elements (pink). Outter shell elements have been removed (in blue in picture 1)
Picture 3 shows the 3D prism layer in light green.

Have you managed to solve the issue?
Have you encountered this problems too?

Hi Bollonga,
I didn't find a solution for creating a satisfied mesh. I tried a structure mesh instead of. I think ICEM cannot create such a mesh as we are referring. ANSYS mesher can actually complete this job. Maybe you can try it. Good luck.
