Hello,

Does anybody know if it is possible to combine two or more named selections in the designmodeler into one named selection?

It's a bit easier in the meshing module, but there is a way in DesignModeler.

Select all the Named Selections you want to merge in the Tree Outline. Right click and choose "Hide Face(s)".

Then choose all the faces visible in the graphics window and create a named selection containing all these faces.

Then choose to show all faces. Next, right click on the named selection with all the irrelevant faces and choose to hide them. Then you are left with all faces of interest, and you can create a new names selection.

Again, this is easier in Meshing, where you can just right click your named selections and choose "Select Items in Group"

Hi,
I saw your post below and i wanted to ask if you can help me with a similar problem. Is there a way i can merge a number of faces in ANSYS Meshing into a single face?

Thanks!
Jimmy

In DesignModeler:
Tools > Merge

Choose faces, not edges

Hello Josef,

I tried what you just suggested but when i selected generate it failed. Do you have any idea why this is happening?

Thanks!
James

Not without further information. Uploading the files would be best

Hello Josef,
Thanks again for writing back. The issue i have is that i have a fluid volume made of two bodies that i have put into one part. I need to use the sweep algorithm to mesh this part and for this the algorithm needs a single source face and a single target face. At the moment that is not the case. The trouble is how to merge two faces that do not belong to the same body? The Design modeler help is saying that the two faces must belong to the same body for this to be possible.

Do you know if i can merge two bodies into one? Or if i can merge two faces belonging to different bodies into one?

It would be great if you can share with me as well the possibility of using the enclosure feature to extract the fluid volume such that when you already have a fluid volume, a subsequent plane or surface slice would not affect that previous volume. My problem is that i get the volume around two lobes as a single volume but when i create another slice to get another volume the plane or surface cuts the previous volume thereby creating the two parts that am having problems with merging of the faces.
Thanks!
Jimmy

Hi.. came across this thread. I have a similar problem whereby I created a solid block in an enclosure(fluid). However, there seems to be overlapping surfaces and i don't know why.

is there a way to remove the overlapping surfaces. or am i doing the geometry wrong?

Hi jonathankxx,

Could you provide some more details about the geometry and post a pic of overlapping geometry?

Cheers

The geometry is a solid block(with windows) enclosed by a domain of fluid. The steps I took to create the geometry is:
1) extrude a block
2) create Enclosure

The 2 bodies were then created as One Part, but there happens to have overlapping mesh. Someone diagnosed that there is overlapping mesh, however, I dont know where is it.

The link to the case file is attached below:

Hi Jonathan,

It looks like you 2 named selections for same geometry like Ceiling and Ceiling-shadow or is it fluid?

I dont have geometry and/or mesh to judge how this overlapping is coming.

My best guess is that you have either two geometry at same place or two named selection of same geometry hence you are getting overlapping error!

Hope this helps,

Cheers Kapi

Hi Kapi,

Sorry, I should have included the geometry file. Here is the step file:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mqryakinxp...odel1.stp?dl=0

Anyway, the named selections 'ceiling' and 'ceiling-shadow' are auto generated in Fluent itself. I do not have any geometry surface that has multiple named selections.

Thanks!

I was not able to find any overlapping in the geometry and as u said there is no geometry with multiple named selection then I suppose there is no overlapping at all.

I was able to mesh the geometry without any errors and ran simulation without any issues!

Cheers

Hi Kapi

Thanks for the help! However, I was unable to reach convergence with this mesh. The min orthagonal quality was 0.055 in FLUENT.

Another question, do you think the geometry created in DesignModeler would have a different geometry in ICEMCFD ??

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

You have to find out areas where your mesh quality isn't good and give sizing to constraint the quality of element. Check Aspect ratio, skewness and orthogonal quality of elements in your mesh and re-mesh the geometry with further constraints to get a good mesh. With the right mesh,I am sure you will be able to converge.

Also, I am not very familiar to ICEM so I would not comment on that.

Hope this helps

Cheers
