Import CGNS in Gambit
Hello everybody.

I have recieved various meshs from the SNECMA, where only NUMECA softwares are used. They would like to compare the results they have with calculs made on another code.

the problem is : none of the files they send me can be opened on gambit. Only the CGNS could be, but, unfortunately for me, it doesn't work.

the only things i managed to do, are to open the cgns file in Fluent (then I've tried to export it into various formats, none of which could be opened into gambit) and in Icem, were i find it impossible to export the mesh or the geometry into whatever format supported by Gambit or Fluent.

Could somebody tell me how to make it work? any idea would help me a lot.

Did you tried to open it in fluent, write the case file and import the *.cas into gambit (import/mesh/Fluent)?

i did try that, with no results what so ever : gambit just won't open it :(

I still am in a tight spot :s

could anybody help me please? i have searched as many info as possible on this forum, without finding anything helpfull.

the best solution would be to find a program which could extract the geometry from the CGNS (iges for instance)

Try importing the *.msh file in Ansa and then in Ansa you can extract surfaces from the mesh and thus you can obtain geometry. This geometry might have some flaws however this works.

Procedure File->Inputs->Fluent

Mesh tab->Elements->To-Surf

Alternate way is try importing *.msh in ICEM CFD and then you can extract surfaces By Tab edit -> (mesh-> Facets) ----option

ICEM CFD choices
In ICEM CFD you have several choices…

If it is unstructured (or structured for that matter), you can simply import the mesh, and then select the output format as “STL”. The output will dump the surfaces as a faceted geometry format that both GAMBIT and TGrid can use… You could also convert the facets to geometry and export the faceted geometry as STL…

You could also take that STL geometry into FE Modeler (free if you have the Workbench platform with DesignModeler) and “skin it” and convert it to a Parasolid. This is very interesting functionality new with 12.0.

In ICEM CFD, if it is a structured Hexa mesh and you have the domain files in ICEM CFD, you can choose Edit (from the top menu next to file) => “Struct mesh -> CAD surfaces”. Then use “File => Export Geometry” to Parasolid or IGES or Rhino3D…
