I'm afraid you cannot import neither the mesh nor the geometry.
Try to export step or iges from 3dsmax (if it is possible)

Thanks for the suggestion!

I was able to export it in STL format using GMSH. That was read into GAMBIT, but now I am having difficulties in reading the geometry...

I just wanted to create a mesh for the body without the wings, any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm sorry, yes, it is imported into GAMBIT. Thanks!

ok, then check if you have a volume imported, or just surfaces (and mesh??)
After you just need to split your geometry for getting the body without the wings.

Unfortunately, I do not have access to 3DSMax. When importing the model in Gambit as an STL mesh, it has no volume. It recognizes faces, edges, and vertices. This would not be a problem, however, I am unable to edit the geometry that has been imported. When I try to edit the geometry it will not let me remove objects because they are "being referenced by an upper topology entity". Another common error that I receive when trying to edit the geometry is the inability to operate on an object because it is associated with a non-real geometry. I am also unable to convert most of these objects to a "real" geometric object.

In summary, I need to import either an STL or a 3DS into Gambit so that I can edit the geometry. And Gambit is not cooperating.

Ok, that's normal because you have virtuals entities.
Try to create a volume with all the surfaces. (it will be successfull only if all the surfaces describe a closed volume).
If it failed, either you have to close the volume, by creating the missing surfaces, or you have to treat the entities with the Clean Up tool (removing cracks, etc...).
Once it is done, you can try to split the surfaces, by as they are virtual it will ask some patience...
But the first question is: what do you want to compute? Flow around the body or just inflating your meshing experience by meshing the body itself?

-mAx-,

This is to be used as the surface description for an Immersed Boundary Method CFD code. I thought this would be a simple task, turns out it wasn't!

We tried what you mentioned and it didn't work. Thanks for your help, but it looks like we'll need to start the mesh from zero.
