Hi there,

I'm unable to create a mesh, using ANSYS Meshing, suitable for translational periodicity, on FLUENT. I guess I've read something about the periodic faces must be conformal, so that's why I need to set this periodic region on meshing (right?!). How do I do it?

I just wanna simulate the flow over this airfoil (s809; chord = 150mm). The dimensions of the volume of air are 1050mmx300mmx10mm. I know It's not correct to define this side walls as 'symmetry' for 3D simulations, so I'm trying to apply periodicity in the spanwise direction (and it's not working so far...)

ps.: I know this is not the volume indicated for this kind of simulation, but that's what I can solve with my notebook.

Can anyone help me??

Thx

Hi AJE,

This is out of my (sleepy) head cause I don't have access to ANSYS at home.

Try using matching controls on the faces together with symmetry>periodic>translational periodic. You must create cartesian coordinate system for this on one periodic face and in translational periodic menu for offset use distance between faces (watch out whether it is plus or minus sign).

In Fluent, you can assign interface BC to the faces you want to be periodic and then in Mesh Interface tab set them to be periodic and use the right offset value. (BTW, meshes don't have to be conformal on faces for periodic to work. But conformal should be more accurate.)

In ANSYS Meshing v 162 it is Model > insert (right mouse button) Symmetry. Then insert into Symmetry folder "Symmetry Region" (you have 3 options: Symmetry Region, Periodic Region, Cyclic Region). Change type to "Linear Periodic" in Details View. Choose two parts of your Periodic BC as Low Boundary and High Boundary, respectively. They could contain more than one geometrical object (Faces, Edges, Vertices). Use Periodic direction to specify translation direction (Y axis on the screenshot below). Linear shift is a shift value between two parts of Periodic BC in proper units.
