Meshing Fundamentals
 

Hi Everyone,

I am doing a project using ICEM CFD at the university, I worked myself through the Tutorial and a think I understand how to use all tools. Now I have the problem, that I dont have a references about the parameters. E.g. which maximum sizes or heights i should use. Can you gibe me some rules of thumb or a link where I can read about it?

It depends on the number of elements you wish to generate.

In tetra mesh, you don't have much control you just need to specify the maximum size info and the surface size info for each surface. There are no rules, but in general the more evenly-sized the mesh the better. For example, it's better to have 1mm sized elements throughout the domain, than have 10mm sized elements in the centre and 0.5mm elements near the walls. The best way you can check that is by cutting a cross-sectional plane after you have generated the mesh and look if you're happy with the result. Also, make sure that the size you specify is smaller than the dimensions of the domain you apply it to. If your domain has a size of 1cm, you cannot place elements sized 1.5cm in it!

In hexa mesh it's slightly more straightforward, as you can divide your block into smaller elements of any size you like.

It takes some tinkering and some failed meshes, but you always get there in the end. Don't be afraid to try. Good luck.
