Creating two different mesh types on a single face

Hi,

How can I create both tri & quad elements on a single face as shown
on the attached file ? Quad and tri elements are not separeted with a line.

with a BL you can obtain someting like your pdf.
But you won't have quads pressing of opposite edges (left bottom corner on pdf).
Else without a split, I don't know how (and I wonder if it is possible)

I tried to attach a BL, as shown in attached file, it didn't work. The Bl doesn't touch the vertices on the left side of the bottom.

with gambit, you only need to split the surface and that's it!

Splitting like that creates a line which needs to be defined as an interface. This is not desired.

If your split is well done, your line will split the surface into 2 connected surfaces.
So interfaces aren't involved here

Please just have a look at the attached file.
It is created with a design modeler. It has a box and a triangler face.
There is no line between the faces.
It has no vertex on the line shown with a red arrow.
What a pity. I can't do it with a Gambit.

I don't understand where is the problem, with the separated line.
Once again, if the 2 surfaces are connected, the line will be treated as element's edge. If you import your mesh if Fluent, you can display the mesh, and you won't see the line anymore:just like what you want.
But I give your right, if the 2 surfaces aren't connected, then, the line will be treated as wall, and then you need interface

by splitting your surfaces into 2 surfaces. Then mesh first surface with quad and the other with tri

Here is how you can do it in ICEM CFD:
  • Geometry: draw two adjacent surfaces and repair geometry...
  • Meshing: mesh one surface 'Quad Dominant' and the other surface 'All Tri'. See figures 1 and 2 for the settings. You should obtain a mesh similar to figure 3.
  • Merge the adjacent nodes: Edit Mesh => Merge Nodes => Merge Tolerance... enter a very small tolerance. See the settings on figure 4.
  • Repair the mesh: Edit mesh => Repair Mesh => Build Mesh Topology... see figure 5.
  • That's it. Now you can apply boundary conditions and export, etc. It will be a continuous hybrid mesh in Fluent, no interior wall.
