Coarsening STL Files?

Hey, all, thanks for reading this post.

What is the best way to coarsen a STL file before it is meshed?

I have a STL file that is quite large (over 2M elements), and I want to create a mesh file out of it that is a lot smaller. The way I used to coarsen the geometry included coarsening the mesh after I tetrahedralized the mesh; every time I used the geometry tool to coarsen it before, it always exited without doing anything.

Any ideas?

What about "Geometry > Create Faceted > Create/Edit Faceted Surfaces > Coarsen Surface" ?
