Question Building Topology Manually

SH_P is on a distinguished road
Hi,

As far as I know, the first step for meshing in many problem is performing "Building Diagnostic Topology". As you know, it automatically generates some curves form geometry features and split the initial surface into several surfaces along closed curves.

Now my question is that is it possible to perform this action manually? To be more specific how can I create my own curves (which are projected on the initial surface) and make them closed and split the initial surface along them?

Thanks for helping.

Yes it can be done manually. Go to geometry panel and use the points, curves and surface related commands.

But I really miss the surface - surface intersection command in ICEM. This might be due to the fact that ICEM is surface base modeller and does not require boolean operations. But still I feel it should be there as it used to be in Gambit.

There is a create curve by surface intersection command in ICEM CFD... First create the intersection curve and then you use the curve to trim the surfaces...

I suppose it would be fairly easy to add a command that combines the two operations, if there is actually demand for it... More and more users are switching to DM or SpaceClaim for their geometry creation (or other CAD tools), so we have not put much work into ICEM CFD geometry tools lately.

If you want that command, like this comment. When we get enough, I will put it on the list.

I would like to to make it clear that the build topology is not only used to extract the points and curves and it has more functions to perform.

And while using build topology you must be careful about the tolerance limit. If you make the too tight tolerance then you may get the unwanted geometry (holes etc) everywhere and if you loose it you may oversimplify the geometry.
