32-bit and 64-bit

Hi everyone,

I am going to use a laptop for CFD (CFX or FLUENT) pre- and post-processing and a desktop for running calculations. I am wondering if it is possible to use a 32-bit laptop and a 64-bit desktop. That means I will use ANSYS 32-bit to set up my problem in CFX-Pre installed on 32-bit laptop and then run the case with ANSYS 64-bit in CFX-Solver installed on 64-bit desktop. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Basically, there should be no problem.

You may find that the laptop screen is too small for serious meshing tasks and post processing, respectively. Secondly, I would recommend to fit your 32-bit laptop with the max. amount of memory (should be 4 GB) + the Windows memory switch enabled (if you run Windows ;-)). Assuming you have a decent graphics card in your laptop you should be fine.

What will be your suggestion for a decent graphic card?

Actually, when I posted my first message, I was at a quite tough time schedule to decide the specifications of the laptop for above mentioned CFD use. After some research, it turned out that I was wrong in worrying 32-bit laptop as 64-bit laptop is normal in market. I chose Lenovo W500 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9600 (2.8GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2), 4GB PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3 memory and ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 (512MB VRAM) with Intel AMT graphic card. What do you think these specifications?
