Wind Turbine on FLUENT
Hello everybody,
I am new to the forum and just started entering the field of CFD. Please be patient with me :) For my bachelor thesis I will be working with the CFD study of a Wind Turbine. I have a few questions: 1) It is possible with ANSYS Fluent to model a rotating Wind Turbine, right? 2) Is Fluent the best option? 3) I just requested an account number for accessing and downloading the tutorials from the ANSYS student portal, is the material going to be enough for my work? Thank you very much. Fed |
Hi federvo.mala,
1. yes, that right! You can use ANSYS FLUENT to modeling wind turbine. 2. May be Fluent is the best CFD software for your problem. But, you can also use ANSYS CFX and other CFD software. 3. With the tutorials from the ANSYS student portal, I think that you can understand more about Fluent and may be to modeling your problem. And you can to practice more tutorial Fluent in its help. Good luck. |
Yes, FLUENT is an excellent tool that is capable of solving your problem
worked on similar problems myself unfortunately, license expired and now I'm trying to figure out Abaqus let me know if you have any questions |

thanks for your replies and your interest, really appreciated it. So, I have been doing some tutorials and looks like that to make my three-bladed turbine rotate I need to use UDF, is that right? I actually thought, that making something move was more straightforward. |
yes, a simple UDF for rotation is needed.. pretty straightforward

Hi
I am leela. I am doing masters in mechanical engineering. I am planning to doa similar project "to show the motion of the air when it goes through the turbine". Could you please advise whether its good to go with ansys fluent or cosmosworks for cfd. I do have little bit of modelling experience in solid works .I am completely new to ansys.
Regards leela |

To be honest, I don't know what the difference b/w the two packages are, but I would use FLUENT just for the fact that you get lots of tutorials and assistance from forum like this. |

can i use singe/multiple rotating reference frames for studying flow through wind turbine? Or UDF is the only way? Can you please tell me a bit of what I should look at for UDF's regarding my problem? Thanks for sharing your knowledge |
Modelling the gemometry
Hi Federico Malatesta
I am lavanya. Thanks for the reply. How did you model the geometry.I mean i came to know that we should model in such a way that it should virtually perform in real life condition.I mean what have you taken in to consideration while modelling ??I am pretty much confused of how to proceed?? |

Im about to start my master's thesis which is CFD simulation of a wind turbine using Ansys fluent can anybody send me blade geometry for wind turbine?:( |

as for the modelling of the wind turbine, can you guys please more specific? do you want to know about meshing? boundary conditions? or the simulation in FLUENT itself? @James i am using the the the blade used in NREL Phase VI Unsteady experiment so that I can also use the experimental data to compare. Just google it, you will find a PDF file. Other than that, google everything or contact companies. Guys, since we are all doing kind of the same project, we're almost at the same level, i.e. beginners, let's try to help each other, so let's post questions, concerns and answers etc etc |

I need the geometry file itself i need the file containing the blade modeled in workbench or whatever :) |

haha. very nice. i´m doing also my master thesis about the same wind turbine simulation. and i wanted to know how it worked for you doing the simulation.because im having some trouble generating the streamline and the wake flow.can some of you help me?
|
Which do you mean by rotating a turbine...
Do you want the air to move the turbine --OR-- The turbine to move the air? |
thank you for the quick answer :)
hi, i want the air to move the turbine.but i read that ist complicated and its easier to give the velocity from the air and to give a rotion rpm for the turbine. in the velocity vector plot i dont see the vortices that are supposed to be generetad by the fluid flow after a body.because the stream lines are a representation with lines of this vortices.isnt it? or im wrong :s ? I design myself a wind turbine in pro e with some data and studies i fond on the internet.the wind velocity is 8 m/s and the rpm are 22.5 So what i did was to put the velocity with a normal velocity inlet and the rotation i did it over the reference frames and the gave rpm. I extracted the turbine from a small circular volumen and then this one from a bigger fluid area. i connected the circular volumen and the fluid volumen with 2 interfaces. the first one the circular front/back is an In place-FAN interface and the second one is the other area and i did it with an In plane-Baffle Interface. Then i said that the turbine region should have an tagential velocity specification method: none and reference frame absolut. im not sure if it works this way for the rotion and the flow from wind. the physics models that im using: 3D,Steady,Ideal Gas,Segregated flow,turbulent,K-epsilon T. and im runing another simulation with Stadard Spalart-Allmaras (eddie). but im not to familiarized with this turbulenz modell. i also wanted to ask something like this is possible with star ccm+ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj_iL8PXOD8 |
If anybody is interested I have posted a single moving reference frame setup in FLUENT on other post with screenshots. It works except for little things.

vertical axis wind turbine
what are the boundary geometry conditions to analyze a verical axis wind turbine in 2d.
pls tell where should be the in let and the outlet |
