Hi,

Can star-CD handle transonic flow? I want to use Star-CD to simulate our transonic turbine flow. However, It seems that the Star-CD employs pressure correction method. I do not know star-cd is good choice for me or not. Thanks.

John

STAR-CD as many commercial codes is based on incompressible flow methods as you might know. By using special tricks they can handle flows upto typically Mach 2.0. However when simulating compressible transsonic flow the stability of the code is very much an issue. In STAR-CD this means that you have to increase the relaxation (smaller factors in STAR). It also helps to work with structured grids. I myself work with transsonic flows (STAR-CD and CFX 5) and have to use unstructured meshes. Also a coupled solver (as opposed to a segregated solver) helps for compressible flow. STAR will have a coupled solver by the end of this year. In the mean time you CAN use STAR for transonic flows.
