Dear all,

The new version of Star CD 3.22 does not show residuals while the simulation is running. When contacted, Adapco is asking a week to solve this problem. If you are about to switch to it, stick to the older version for a while.

I am a new person in the field of environmental Engineering using CFD models. I want to learn how to use the star CD software and I have no idea about it. Please Help me.

The best way to learn Star CD is to get started with prostar. go to help-tutuorial-startut. And then follow the examples as per your area of interest. After a couple of examples you'll star feeling confident and u shud be ready to explore quality.

No I don't think so. You 'll need additional information which is given during e.g. a training course.

well, im using it and they said they'll take a week to figure out this problem. And they said this 2 weeks back and no one has got back to me on this!!!!

Samir,

Are you running serial or parralell? If you are on Linux, are you starting your *.exe from the command line. Keep in mind there is no longer a starlink, it is only star. Are not getting a .log or .info file?

Hi Kevin,

I am working on a linux workstation (dual processor). But I am not using the command line. The window does pop up, but it shows nothing on there. I try to connect it to host but it says no host.

Just work at the command line. There is no need to use starwatch at all. It is just a nice add on if it works but nothing to worry about if it does not work.

Samir, are you talking talking about the StarWatch utility? I have been using STAR-CD for quite a few years now, and have never been able to get it to work. The last time I asked tech support about it (about 5 years ago), they said, "Don't even bother." So I don't. I start star from the command line and track the convergence using what is printed during the run. Tom

Hi Tom,

Well, I havent had much experience either with Star CD or Linux. But, I have used Fluent with windows and the residuals plot was what helped me to decide on the relaxation parameters yielding a smoother/ better residual plot. Thanks,

I think its been rewritten a little in the last 5 years. You might want to give it another chance. It certainly works when I use it (Linux version).

In the meantime you can use the following script. It requires gnuplot and perl to be installed on your machine.

In STAR-CD v3.200 the starwatch utility does work. I've used it on linux by doing the following:

1. start the starwatch daemon:

starwdaemon &

2. start starwatch:

starwatch &

3. start your star job with the -watch option:

star -watch

After the job gets going a mesage should appear about the job being registered. At that point, go to the starwatch window and select

Connect --> Host...

A dialog box should appear with your machine name in it. Click OK, select the process ID, then OK again. The residuals should appear in the starwatch window.

If your machine is a shared memory machine with more than 1 processor, you can start a parallel job with the -watch option and the number of cpu's. For example, a two-cpu run:

star -watch 2

You can also change solver setting the the v322 starwatch - very handy.

But if you can't get it going (it is not hard - read the install manual!) ...

You can easily open the STAR GUIde and the menu Analysis Prep.., Run History and hit the Plot Residual History and all the other plots on the page - this is my normal way of monitoring things.

However I am increasingly using the boundary and cell monitoring facilities - pick several locations in the model and track them - gives a more complete picture than just residuals and one cell monitoring.

Is there some way of monitoring the residuals if I am running my simulation on a HPC-cluster? I have never gotten starwatch to function at all, even when I used to run simulations locally on my own UNIX workstation...

Well, i used to do them on FLUENT. but im not sure if u can do that in starcd(linux)-thats what im using, i dont any either. so it doesnt matter if ur running a cluster or working on a workstation. Right?
