one more thing that u can do is save the surface as *.igs file and then import it in Pro-surf

you can follow the sequence

1. cad surface(*.igs) to prosurf 2. save as *.dbs (surface mesh)or in *.cel, *.vrt to proam

maybe your path to *.stl is not in english.

Is the *.stl file greater than 2 GB? (For example a very big/complex fine resolved geometriy with maxsag of 0.001 (or about) and STL in ASCII).

If so try using the binary STL format in CATIA. That would reduce the file size dramatically.
