Fracture mechanics newbie needs help setting up and solving fracture length problem

I am looking for help with a small project. I would like to find someone who is a good teacher and is experienced in dealing with fracture calculations. My background is not in fracture mechanics / stress analysis. This would probably be a simple job for anyone who does have a background in this kind of thing.

I would like help with calculating how far a fracture can propagate. I have come across a papers where this is done at varying levels of complexity, but don't want to go in the wrong direction. (1) I want to use the simplest method possible that would give me an idea of the general behavior of my system. (2) I would also like to understand how I might consider making the calculations more realistic in future. (3) I want to get an idea of which commonly-available software I could use in future.

If any part of this sounds interesting, please get in touch. Or feel free to send recommendations for any good freelancers you know of, or places for looking for freelancers. I'm having a hard time finding fracture mechanics people.
