Smaller trn files
 
Hello, is there a way to produce smaller trn files (or to shrink them)?
I run a transient simulation (ANSYS 13) of a 40m diameter wind turbine rotor (rotating at 27rpm) in a period of 60min. I take transient results every minute and every file is about 1.36GB.
Any ideas in how to reduce the files' size?

Hello Mr Vafiadis,

You can try setting the results to only contain the variables you expect to use in your postprocessing. Also set the compression to "Low speed most compression" that will add proccesing time everytime you write or open results, but it saves some space.

If you do that and you still get too big results, consider getting results every two minutes, or maybe setting an expression to get more results in the beggning (say, 10 results in the first minute) and less in the end, and ending up with less unused timesteps.

Also, i'm not really sure if what's causing the size of the trn file is that your mesh could be too large/fine. How about running a simple mesh or simpler case to identify the timesteps that are more of interest and then getting results focused on those steps?

Assuming you cannot save fewer time steps, the thing which saves the most space is reducing the number of variables in the file. If you only save the pressure field and no other variables the file size will shrink dramatically. Obviously you will not be able to do any post processing on anything but pressure then. So consider what post processing you are going to do in advance, and only save those variables. Don't forget you will also save the mesh if it is a moving mesh/FSI simulation.
