For practical purposes, do I need to activate "automatic inflation" during CFD runs on large ductwork models e.g. 3 meters plus in diameters, employing a layer of perforated plate?

I have run a few trial runs and that the pressure drop across a couple of meters is quite very low. I am only interested in the general gasflow profile within reasonable simulation time. If I activate inflation along the walls, this would result in significant number of elements, which could substantially increase the corresponding calculation time.

Any clarifications would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Good question!

Inflation layers increase the accuracy of modelling the boundary layer. If the boundary layer does not contribute much to the flow then inflation layers will not be worth the effort.

I cannot directly answer your question without knowing exactly what you are modelling or what results you are looking for. But for most cases in large ducts of short length (like you seem to have) then I would not be surprised if the boundary layer is not important, so inflation layers may not be worth the effort.

Hello Glenn,

Thank you for the clarification. And as usual, we are learning free lessons from your expertise. Godspeed!
