Patran Volume Meshing

Hi,

Could anybody please explain the difference between mesh seed and node in patran volume meshing? If i'd like to creat a hexa mesh and export it as patran neutral file, what should I do? Previously I created geometric solid, mesh seed and then mesh. After that I exported it as a neutral file but no file created and no error message reported. How can I get through this?

Thank you in advance. ^_^'

Hi Jackie

If you are using CFX-5.5.1 you need to create your initial CFX-Build database in 'Mesh Only' mode. Then you can select Patran Volume Meshing using Preferences>Mesh Mode from the Main Menu.

In 5.5.1 you create 3D regions and 2D regions for Patran Volume Meshing just like standard meshing - just create the regions you need. You then only need to mesh the 3D regions for your problem (e.g. using tets or hexes or both etc ...), applying mesh seeds as you need them.

After you've done this, the Write File button writes a Patran Neutral File - the elements and regions should be automatically written to the file.

Hi Sharks,

Thank you for your replying. Do you mean to write it as a definition file? After i created mesh seed and mesh. The Def.File icon was toggle off, so I can't write the deffinition file. I have tried to export file by go to file/export but there's no file created. If you have any idea please give me some suggestion . Jackie

Re: Patran Volume Meshing

Hi Jackie

My apologies! - my comments were valid only for 5.6beta Build.

In 5.5.1 you need to:

1) Create your volume mesh using the Patran Volume Meshing tools (the Mesh icon).

2) Create your regions by creating separate 'Groups' for each (Group>Create from the main menu): select 3D elements for 3D regions, and nodes for 2D regions. The polygon picking tool will be useful for this.

3) Use the File>Export utility to export to a Neutral file. On the Neutral Options list, select only Nodes, Elements and Named Component Definitions (these are your groups/regions) for the export, together with the groups which contain them.

You then have to create a separate Build database in Volume Mesh Import mode to import the mesh and apply your physics.

All of this is made much easier in 5.6, and my previous comments will be applicable.

Sorry for the confusion!

Best regards,

Sharks
