Im relatively new to cfx but am using it (CFX5.6) to create a model of an abdominal aortic aneurysm as part of a final year project. The data is coming from a hand held laser scanner as an IGES file (can be either a cloud of points, or a triangular mesh). I am having difficulties however in generating a SURFACE from either the set of points, or curves and am hoping somebody may have used CFX for a similar application ?

Hi Helen

There is a Geometry function in CFX-Build called Create>Surface>Mesh. This function will create a surface from a number of shell elements (tri or quad) in the model.

If your elements import OK from your IGES file, this might be what you need.

Hi unfortunately my model contains so many elements that I dont think it will be possible to create a surface in this way.

Thanks helen

If you have access to CFX CAD2Mesh (this is based on ICEM CFD Tetra) the task should not be such a big problem. You can use your triangular mesh as a geometrical description of your model and mesh it straight forward.

If you are curious about the quality of the triangular mesh which you already have, because it does not capture the curvature of the real geometry, there is a module within ICEM CFD called mesh prototyper which generates smooth surfaces based on a point cloud or triangular mesh.
