Default Hexa meshes with ICEM CFD 5.1

I want to simulate a gas-solid cyclone and I am meshing the cyclone geometry with IDEM CFD 5.1 but got problem. First I blocked all cyclone with a single block then split it into four or five blocks, but feed pipe is very hard to handle. Second I used three blocks for finder, cyclone body and feed pipe, this is easy to handle but meshes generated are incorrect.

Can anybody give me some advice for the hexa meshing of cyclone?

thanks very much

your approach causes bad cells in the connection area between inlet and cyclon housing. So you first block should be generated between the inner outlet and the inlet pipe. Form this starting block try to extract it in all the required directions.

And a other good hint is to forget approach one for all times. With this blocking strategie the meshing fails in the end very often! 1. Start with one block 2. EXTRACT!

I tried to block cyclone one day but can not achieved. The key problem is that the block for rectangular inlet will be deformed when I associate vertex to the point on the circle (cyclone housing), and this will give bad cells.

I will very appreciate if you give me a tutorial for cyclone hexa meshing.

Thanks very much

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I had the same problem some years ago. At the moment i am not in the office so i can't look it up at the moment. I send you a message next week.

(maybe collapse the edge with the bad cells, this causes a row of prism in the area of distorted hexas)

Another problem is that the part of interior outlet pipe (part of vortex finder inside the cyclone housing) is disappeared when I finished the meshing of whole cyclone. Previously I used CFX-Mesh to generate the grits and it is easy to do, but no hexa cells can be generated.

Would you advice me how to handle the inside outlet pipe.

Thanks very much

F.K,

Would you please give some recommendations for the Hexa meshing of cyclone when you have time.

Thanks very much

Hi there,

I have had the same problems with Icem cfd, TG, and grid gen, as most of them follow the same method of mesh building.

Most of my mesh problems have been solved with Harpoon V1.3d, as its so easy to use, you may need no-more than 1 day to be expert with. It will be far better if you use V1.4+

Thanks, Jane
