Massless particle tracking in CFX-5.7.1

Here's hopefully an easy one for you guys. What's the easiest way to create massless particle tracks from a series of transient results files. Obviously you can get CFX-post to plot streamlines in one of the .res files at a specific time step, but what I want is the pathline to be tracked in time. Is this only possible by first setting up the particle tracking option in CFX-pre?

Hi James,

Yes, the only way I know of is to set up transient particle tracking in CFX-Pre and rerun the simulation. Note this is a beta feature in 5.7, but I think it is a fully supported feature in CFX10 coming soon.

Glenn

Thanks for your reply. It's a bit of a pain they haven't made it possible to track massless particles from a series of transient data files in CFX-pre. Do you know any other visualisation packages like fieldview which can do this?

Having to specify the locations of the particles you wish to track, before you have any idea of what the flow field is doing, make's it hard to place them in the right locations!

Hi James,

Feildview and Ensight should be able to do massless particles from results files.

Massless particles which do not affect the flow should not introduce a significant CPU load. I would specify lots of them and then you can choose the ones which are useful.

So i guess i've have to purchase an extra visulisation tool just to do this job or just wait until the next version of CFX comes out which can do transient particle tracking.

Just looking at the particle tracking set up in CFX-pre it doesn't look too obvious how one goes about setting massless particles! What particle diameter should be set, does the particle material have to have density of 0 kg m^-3 (this seems to give an error)? I guess once you now how its probably pretty easy. A few tips would be useful.
