ICEM10:Convert to Unstructured/Multiblock mesh?
 

Hello. I've created a hex mesh in ICEMCFD 10 today & wish to export it in a CFX 10 format. Anyone know the difference between options "convert to unstructured mesh" and "convert to Multiblock mesh" when right-click "Pre-Mesh" under blocking? I don't get the mutliblock option in previous version and wonder what it is now.

When I open an old project, ICEM always turn on the mesh & GUI becomes very slow esp for a fine mesh. Is there a way to change the default setting so that mesh is always turn off when loading a project?

For CFX 10 you have to use "convert to unstructured mesh". "Convert to Multiblock mesh" is for solvers that can still use structured meshes. Good way to get rid of the mesh is to unload it before saving.

Thank you. How could I unload the mesh? I can't find any such option available in the GUI. Any methods/commands to unload the mesh other than deleting *.uns file?

Go to the "File" menu, then "Mesh", then "Close Mesh"

I don't be sure that CFX 10 does not accept structured mesh !!I though that CFX 10 accepts unstructured mesh, but also structured mesh !!

The way we mostly use the ICEM/CFX system is to build a multi-block structured hex mesh and to convert that to unstructured. The CFX10 solver works only with unstructured meshes, but for aerodynamic flows at least you get best results with the hex mesh.

The solver in CFX 10 is an unstructured solver. You can import a structured CFX 4 mesh into CFX 10, but it will be decomposed into cells and treated as an unstructured mesh. Likewise, in Icem you can build a block-structured hexahedral mesh, but you can't export it as a structured CFX (after version 5.5) grid. You have to convert it to an unstructured mesh for the CFX solver. This is also the way with Fluent, FWIW. Structured commercial solvers are now quite rare.

I seek some help here. I have created a 2D mesh creating 2D blocking, which is shown in the figure. I am only able to use the option " convert into multiblock mesh" and not " convert to unstructured mesh". Hence using " convert to unstructured mesh" option I get the error message: “Error opening file D:/Parth : No such file or directory… Error: opening mesh file Unloaded unstructured domain “

Can you anybody explain why this is happening?
