Hi guys.... I realise that my disk is almost full when I run a transient simulation. I wish to move some trn file in dir folder to free up some space. Will this corrupt the end result? It takes three weeks to get it finished. So please give some advices if you can. Thank you.

Hello, Dean. Not long ago I have tried to do this, but after the end of simulation in CFX-Post I could not handle the trn file I have moved from dir folder. It is better to move/delete something else.

Hi Dean,

There is no problem with doing this, but you'll need to move the trn files back to the run directory when it is done (or, at least move the rest of the run directory over afterwards). Post will look for the trn files in a directory at the same level as the RES file and with the same name.

If you stop and restart a run, you can copy the trn files from the previous run to the new run directory in order to recover the full transient.

Dear Dean,

Careful here.. If you look at your run directory, you will see another file named <name>.mon which is part of a full transient file (its monitor file) and they get merged together at the end of the run.. If they files are not there, these transient (assuming they are full) will not have convergence history associated with them..

If you must move the transient part, you better move the monitor file part as well.. ANSYS CFX help desk may be able to help you on how to merge them together later..

Good luck and be careful, Opaque..

Definitely DO NOT MOVE ANY OTHER FILES. Just move the trn files. These are copied to a seperate directory at the end of the run. The mon file and others should be left in place.

Default Another question:What's mom files doing?

Thank you all.

opaque: It's the trn file that takes lots of space. I'll backup all mom files in dir folder and MOVE trn files to some other places.

Robin: Just to make sure there's no misunderstanding here. I can move the trn files back to *_001 folder (it's *_001.dir when solver's running) when solver finishes its run, not when it's still running, right? These trn file will be picked up automatically by post after I move them back to *_001 folder.

My current disk is definitely not able to accommodate all trn files for full transient simulation.

Did you guys know the function of mom files? They're all disappeared when a job is finished if I don't move any trn files. However, mom files for those I moved were still remained in *_001 folder when solver was ended.

Sorry. I rephrase my question here: Do I need to do anything if mom files are not merged with Trn files when it finishes? These mom files are always disappeared at the end if mom & trn files are saved in the same directory.

Please kindly help as solver will run another 10 days. I can't afford repeating the simulation now.

Really thank you for helps here.

Dear Dean,

The mon (for monitor) files are merged into the <number>_full.trn files at the end of the run..Then, deleted.

If you move the trn files, the ANSYS CFX solver will not merged anything.. What that means? Means that you cannot longer see the residual plots information embedded into any of your transient files. If that is not important to you, then nothing wrong is going to happen. You still can see the total residual plots from your final results file..

Hope the info helps, Opaque..

Hi Dean,

The solver continually writes to the mon file, updating the status of all the monitor data at the end of each iteration. A snapshot of the mon file is written to each full trn file and each backup file during the run. At the end of the run, the final mon file is merged into the RES, which is what allows you to remonitor a run after it has finished. No harm is done if this data is lost, but it's useful to have around.

To answer your previous question, you are right to assume it is OK to move the trn files back to the _001 directory. This is where Post will look for them.

Regards, Robin
