Can I use Turbogrid to mesh a wind turbine blade?

Hi, everyone:

Can I use the Turbogrid to mesh the flow field of a wind turbine blade?

I know the Turbogrid can mesh an internal flow turbomachine easily such as gas turbine and water turbine. But I'm not sure whether it can mesh an external flow rotor like wind turbine. Does anyone has some experience and give me some advice?

Thank you!

the shroud must be defined near the tip of blade but in the wind turbine study we need a region between tip and shroud for this we cannot use turbogrid , try icem cfd

Thank you! I think you are right.

Maybe you make an artifical shroud. In other words, put a GGI as shroud.

THE TIP OF WIND TURBINE IS GENERALY NOT CIRCULAR (plan form); circular shroud is hardly find

Re: Can I use Turbogrid to mesh a wind turbine bla

NON-CIRCULAR BLADE TIP DOES NOT PREVENT YOU USING A CIRCULAR SHROUD. Why? The only purpose of that artifical shroud is to generate mesh in Turbogrid. Wind turbine does not have a shroud. You can create any shape of shroud provided it encloses wind turbine blade. Certianly, because of non-circular tip, you will have non-constant tip clearance if you create a circular shroud. In Pre, you can treat it as a GGI surface.

good idea but my wind turbine for example is expressed in Cartesian coordinates for fixed span but turbogrid need coordinates at fixed radial position R not Z

Re: Can I use Turbogrid to mesh a wind turbine bla

Converting Cartesian coordinates into cylindrical coordinates is not a big problem. The difficult part is to create blade profile in .curve format from your wind turbine geometry model.

No its not a problem of coordinate transformation but my wind turbine model( Nrel phase 6) is defined with plan form profiles at fixed span. in turbogrid profile.curve the profil must be defined with variable z no ? ANOTHER QUESTION. how can TRANSFORM XYZ COORDINATES TO MERIDIONAL M,THEta

thanks

hi

wind turbine blade modelling needs a NACA profiles for its profile defination wheras blademodeller of tubogrid, models the blade using curves defined by various points and angles.........my question is , is there some option in bladegen of turbo for defining blade using NACA profiles.

Thanks

Hi ,

Here is a collective answer to some of the above questions,
1) GGI option for shroud can be used and has been used by ppl to simulate wind turbines using turbo-grid meshing.
2) For Blade Profile definition you just need the co-ordinates. For eg. if you want to rotate a blade about x. axis, define the airfoils in X-Y planes and vary Z co-ordinate. I myself ahve done this and my blade was twisted as well.
3) Cartesian co-ordinates are enough, no need to enter cylindrical co-ordinates.

Hope this helps,
D.B
