Default ICEM CFD vs CFXMesh

Hi, all, I do not have much experience on ICEM Tetra. Most of the time I just used CFXMesh. I know ICEM Tetra is more powerful, but complicated than CFXMesh in use after I tried it. To generate mixed mesh (Tera and Hexa), it needs extra Hexa license. Is there a reason to keep both ICEM Tetra and CFXMesh? If only one will be kept in order to save money, which one is better?

Thanks.

Hi,

You can mesh just about anything in ICEM, but you can mesh most things much easier with CFX-Mesh. Also the default CFX-Mesh option will become much more powerful when CFX11 is realeased as you will then be able to make prism/tet/hex meshes in workbench as the meshing capabilities of ANSYS will become available. This functionality currently exists in ICEM and is very powerful, but unless you use ICEM all the time it will take a bit of practise and trials before you get a good result.

I should have specified that I normally use ICEM match, I do not have much experience with CFX mesh.

Overall, the most important thing is that you use software which you are most comfortable with. But don't be afraid to learn how to use new, more powerful applications.

Glenn, thanks for your info.

It is ideal to have a tool that can generate Tetra, Prism and Hexa mesh all together. I love learning new things, actually I am familiar with ICEM basic (Tetra and Prism). It just seems a little redundant between CFXMesh and ICEM basic.

As you are saying in ANSYS WORKBENCH 11, the CFXMesh can generate Hexa as well. If so, that is good news.

I tried the Meshing tool inside WB11P5. It seems the user can select which meshing method. If all of them check out the same license, that is great.

This is the first time I hear CFX-Mesh will generate Hexa mesh. In WB 11, you can choose meshing methoud in Meshing Application. But CFX-Mesh still generates Tetra and Prism mesh.

The Meshing in ANSYS 11 has Tetra, Hex dominant, Sweep, and CFXMesh. Can the Hex dominant generate Hexa mesh? It seems like from the surface mesh. I did not know how to check the volume mesh. I do not know if the Tetra, Sweep, and Hex dominant have the inflation layer capability.

All in all, could the new ANSYS Meshing generate a good and efficient mesh, which may include Tetra, Prism and Hexa together. That is what I am looking for. Probably only the full ICEM CFD can do this.

Hi,

Just to clarify things (hopefully!), in CFX11 you have a number of meshing options in workbench. One of these options is CFX-Mesh which is the current tet/prism mesher, but you can also use the ANSYS meshing tools such as hex dominant and full hex meshes. To my knowledge the only mesher out of this lot which supports prism boundary layers is still CFX-Mesh so you cannot do a hex-core mesh with a prism boundary layer.

For the record, you can currently do hex core, tet transition, prism boundary layer meshes with ICEM.
