Hello, I am running a CFX run on a laptop and I need to pause it so I can take the computer somewhere else. Is it possible to pause a simulation while running? Would it be possible to put the computer into hibernation or standby while the simulation is running and it would resume when the computer is back on?

It works ... if you put the computer into hibernation, the simulation will resume normally when u turn it back on again .. thanx

You can stop the run from Solver Mannager, this will generate a .res file. You can turn off your laptop and restart later, for this define a new run, select same .def and select .res as Initial Values File.

Also you can restart a run from a .back file instead a .res file.

Also I am not sure how the license manager will respond to a run going into hibernation. If the laptop is the license manager then it is no problem but if you use another machine as a license server you may have licensing problems.

In addtion to the answer posted before, a true pause of the run (no stop and restart) can be achieved as follows:

1. Under Windows 10, start the Resource Monitor by Win+R and typing "resmon".
2. Select all running Ansys CFX solver processes (solver-mpi.exe), right click and choose "Pause Process".

CPU workload should instantly fall. However, RAM won't since soluton data is stored in memory. Keep that in mind when starting further simulations!


If you want to continue simulation, select all paused processes again, right click and choose "Continue Process".


Simulation should immediately restart.

Sure, but note my post #5 (from 15 years ago!) I am not sure how the license manager will handle this, you might have licensing problems.

No, it works. I tested it on my own. License remains of course checked out. You only pause the processors/ tasks from calculating. However, I cannot say how hibernation affects license status.
I know that the thread is real old, but it is the only discussion about pausing and resuming (not stopping and restarting) a CFX simulation. Just wanted to share my experiences.
