results file (.res) cannot be written

Hi everyone,

I did a run for almost 5 days now, and I decided to manually stop the run by clicking on the 'Stop' button. But no results file (.res) had been written yet, and I had been waiting for like 5 hours.

Right now, all i have left are the transient files from the simulation. Is there a way to access these files in CFX-Post without first opening up the *.res file as mine was not written?

I will be a pity to be not able to access these transient results just because of the result file not being available. Pretty sure there is a way to do it, just seems to figure out how.

Hope you guys can help me out and thanks in advance.

You should be able to view the *.trns result files like any other result file. (File--> Load Results) Or You could goto to Tools and use the timestep selector option.

I can't because the transient file that i had written is not a full transient file. In CFX-Pre, I chose 'Selected variables' for my transient files, which means I can't open it without the result file.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi Ken,

You can also open the .trn files if you open a back up (x_full.bak) file in post. It will open all the .trn files up until that .bak timestep, and you can manually load the rest in the "timestep selector" window.

If you did a run for 5 days and don't have any .bak files, you are a much braver man than I.

Hi,

Transient results files are visible if you do a full backup, or if you do a reduced backup you need to include the mesh. If you do not include the mesh the file will only be readable if you have a full backup later.

Sounds like you need to rerun the simulation. Make sure you put in regular full backups so you can recover from crashes like this.

Re: results file (.res) cannot be written

Hi Ken,

I have experienced similar problems when running large simulations.

I tried stopping the simulation but it never finished. Eventually I got tired of waiting and manually killed one of the solver processes. The simulation finished and the results file was written. Apparently the program was hung-up somewhere.

If you're lucky this might be the case for you.

Well, you're not completely lost. You can rerun your simulation for just one (1) timestep and create a res file from that point. In Post, you can than manually import the transient files you already have. I haven't tried that, though. Hope it helps.
