Is there any way to define pitching - plunging motion of an airfoil without using mesh deformation ?

Thanks in advance.

Farid

Actually, I'm also trying to do this. I currently have a rotating domain inside a stationary domain, and am specifying the motion of the rotating domain using a sin function to alternate between a +ve and a -ve angular velocity, thereby making the rotating domain change direction periodically. This has however been giving me odd results. It seems that the solver works well up until the direction of pitching changes. When it does, the velocity vectors in the rotating domain change drastically. I know, a picture is worth a thousand words. I have a video of it, but can't upload it here I guess. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy, Thanks a lot. I have done a simulation for pitching motion and the results seem reasonable.I used Transient Rotor Stator Option for the Domain interface.

Now I am trying to run a plunging case. But for this case, the motion is translational in both upward and downward. There is a way to do this modeling using mesh deformation. But I want to do it without mesh deformation.

Thanks Farid

Try doing a search for how people do modelling of 'oscillating cylinders in crossflow' (similar motion to your plunging motion. You may find information there on how to do it without using mesh deformation)

I was wondering, did you use a rotating domain with the airfoil inside a stationary domain for the pitching motion you did? Any other specific settings you used? I'm guessing you didn't use mesh deformation for that case?

Send me an email: andy.fiedler@gmail.com

Cheers,

Andy
