Fieldview 11.1 + Python to extract 3D core of data

So, I have a goal of calculating an optical path distortion value from CFD-solved flow. I've tried several things to get this data, and get it out. One of the things I'm trying to do is export Fieldview data from a sample of the flow. Once I get the cylindrical volume of data out, I will integrate lengthwise and get a circular OPD function (assuming that's possible). Fieldview help is remarkably unhelpful, at least what I've found is, but it appears that FV 11.1 has a Python interface enabling one to run a Python script in FV. Who knows the details of running a Python script in FV? Is this possible in FV? If you have an example, I'd be incredibly grateful. I need to know variable names (input variables), and the general format. It appears that Python is a lot like C++, so I'll be able to figure it out with an example.
