Visual Studio Settings for compiling

Hello All

I have windows 7 (64 bit) operating system and fluent 14. Since past 3 days I have been trying to install Visual Studio and SDK for compiling UDF. Just this morning I managed to fix everything and now I can compile UDF without any problem. Though I am not familiar with Visual Studio and SDK stuff.

Before the success I tried several solutions given in forums and other websites. I even tried re-installing Ansys-VS2008-SDK in all possible sequences. I am sure I have installed some useless stuff also. Since my operating system is 64 bit may be I have installed some stuff that were 32 bit. Since everything seems to work fine now I dont want to bother my PC anymore.

I am asking these questions because I need to fix the same problem with my laptop and I dont wish to waste same amount of time that I did with the PC.

I do understand that visual studio does not care if your system is 64 or 32 bit (Please correct me if I am wrong). How about .NET and SDK?

I installed VS2008, then .NET 4 and then SDK (64 bit). Does it matter in which sequence we install these program?

Is it needed to install those whole? I thought just VS2008 should be installed.

These instructions are given on the Ansys customer portal. So, I just followed whatever was mentioned.

I have seen many people struggle with this, so thought it might be good to share and discuss.

Here it is.

It is mentioned that we must use Visual Studio 2010 but I managed to follow same instructions with Visual Studio 2008.

Also I downloaded SDK 64 bit version from this link : http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...DKX_EN_DVD.iso .

For benefit of others here are exact steps that I followed:

1. Install Visual Studio 2008 (available free on various websites).
2. Install .NET framework 4 from Microsoft website. (Without this I could not install SDK. It seems .NET 4 is necessary for the SDK)
3. Install Microsoft Windows SDK version 7.1 (Software Development Kit). [Imp.: Make sure you have the right SDK i.e. 32-Bit or 64-Bit]
4. Set environmental variables by running 'setenv' program inside fluent installation directory.
5. Start the SDK Command Window i.e. 'CMD shell'.
6. Change directory to working directory.
7. Launch fluent by e.g "C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v140\fluent\ntbin\win64\fluent.exe" (The fluent path could vary depending on individual's installation directory.)
