Surface oxidation reaction possible?
 

I am currently trying to replicate the modelling of some basic coal self heating (ie <70degC) oxidation that was performed in ANSYS Fluent and published in a journal paper.

The basic setup was laminar flow in a porous medium using Darcy's law. The spontaneous heating of coal was modelled as a surface chemical reaction - coal oxidation - occurring on the coal surface in a porous medium. The reaction they modelled was:
Coal + O2 -> CO2 + 0.1CO + 300kJ/mol-O2

Done using the Arrhenius relation.

I took cues from the surface reaction tutorial provided with Fluent to set this up but I can't get any heat evolution even though I setup surfaces to run this reaction and worked out the enthalpy of formation for this version of coal. Wall surface reactions were turned on. The documentation makes it look like surface reactions are just for the deposition of materials and not for any sort of oxidation.

Should Fluent be able to run this simulation?
