Reading a fluent data file (.dat) using another application

Hello,

I am relatively new to using Fluent for CFD, and I have a simple steady solution that I managed to set-up. I saved the Fluent case and data files (.cas and .dat) on my computer. I am now interested in using an external application to open that .dat file so that I can see the data file pattern, and try and write a simple parser for it in Fortran to read the nodal velocity data. I was wondering whether there is any way to ensure that the '.dat' files are readable by other text editing applications or so ?

Thanks.

I would like to add on to the question - I figured out how to read the file using an external application. Typical settings for writing the case and data files are to write binary files. While saving the files from Fluent, all you need to do is to uncheck that option.

However, I have now questions on the way these data files are structured. I was wondering whether anyone can help me with a way to extract the nodal velocity data from these files ?

Thanks.
