I'm getting to grips with the adjoint solver, but have found that when you run a calculation and accept suggested changes to the mesh, the original mesh is replaced with the new one. This isn't idea if I decide I want to go back and reuse the old mesh.

I'm wondering what you guys do when setting up these cases... Do you usually just create a copy of the original mesh file, so you still have the original saved while using the copy for adjoint optimisation, or is there something more subtle you'd recommend I do?

Thanks!

Hi ptstorey,

a usual way to do adjoint optimization is to run the CFD and adjoint calculation. The adjoint gives you the sensitivities. Now I recommend to save the cas/dat file as design0.cas/dat. Then you can use the design tool (R16) in order to realize the optimization. Of course, this will change the mesh due to design modification by morphing. With the design tool you can revert the design modification in order to get the last mesh.

Thanks. What do you mean by/ where is the design tool (R16)...?

Also, do you happen to know if it's possible to refine the mesh after adjoint optimisation? Some elements become a bit stretched after excessive modification.
