how to simulate particle jumping out from a water flume cavity

i have done some experiments in a water flume which has a rectangular cavity (please see attached pic). during my experiment, i put a small particle in the cavity, and then the particle automatically jumps out of the cavity, perhaps due to velocity fluctuations and eddies in the cavity. till now i have been able to match the velocity profiles from the experiment to the fluent simulation, but i am not able to simulate this jumping of particles out of the cavity. for turbulence, i am using k-epsilon model with steady solver and i got converged results. i tried using DPM for modeling the particle, but the particle never jumps out in fluent when particle density = 1.2 g/cc, although it jumps out when density < water density; the latter is of course for obvious reasons. but that means my DPM modeling is correct, isn't it? so how do i simulate this particle jumping out? 1. do i need to use other turbulence models, not k-epsilon? if yes, then which one. 2. do i need to use transient solver, not steady? if so, why? 3. i have tried steady and unsteady DPM both, but none of them helps..still which DPM should i use - steady or unsteady? problem with unsteady DPM is that it doesn't give the particle trajectory. please let me know if u have any suggestions. thanks a lot :) |

hey thanks for suggesting cfdem..
but it takes lot of time to learn a new software i have already spent some time with fluent, so was expecting it can be done with fluent too. anyway, any idea on how to simulate the phenomenon. do i need to use some other turbulence model not k-epsilon, transient, steady, anything ? thanks for ur help :-) |
