Default Dynamic mesh for a body in a flow (6DOF solver)

Hello everyone,

I am working on a 2D simulation for a body moving along with a flow. I am using the 6DOF solver in Fluent, and the UDF consists of basically just the mass and moments of inertia of the body (since I want to observe how the translates/rotates in response to the pressure/viscous forces).

I've read almost every single thread on the forum which relates to my problem, but I haven't been able to figure out a generalized scheme of setting up things as far as the dynamic mesh goes. As a result, I end up getting negative volumes in certain flow conditions, whereas in some others I see the body just move along fine with the flow (with remeshing being evident in the solution).

So here are some general queries:

(i) A couple of tutorials that I've read (falling box and reed valve) have used "prism layers" around the main body (as boundary layers), and they just enable the "passive" option on this region. But one of my cases worked without using this prism-layer region. So what is the prism region actually used for and is it mandatory?

(ii) I define my body to be "rigid body" under the dynamic zones. Should I also define the surrounding fluid to be "deforming"?

Forgive me for the long post, I hope to get some answers to these basic queries. Thanks all!
