New PC for Fluent55 or 6
Dear all, I have follwed all info. in this forum about PC specification, however, I still need some help to decide buying new PC for FLUENT55 and 6, I would appreciate some sugguests form all of you.
I want to run multiphase flow case including VOF, DPM model for two liquid phase and particle laden flow. grid cells is around 20K-500K, maybe more by adaptive approach. My questions are: (1) does it possible run in PC with FLUENT locally installation? 1.4GB CPU is enough? could you please give detail specification for new PC order.CPU, memory,HDD, and so on. (2) does it should run on Linux (much faster than win2k?) can I install both OS?

You didn't mention if you were looking at a 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 or a 1.4 GHz Athlon. Either way, I'd suggest you look for something a bit faster (you'll appreciate the speed with the 500+K cell simulations). The 1.8A GHz Pentium 4 (the A stands for Northwood) will run about 40% faster than the 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 and only costs about $75 more in many stores. The 1.6 GHz Athlon will run about 15% faster than the 1.4 GHz Athlon and is also about $75 more. Both speed boosts are significant for just $75. These are American dollars.
Since you will be running simulations with 500+K cells, I'd suggest you get at least 768MB of memory. In fact you should consider purchasing 1GB of memory just in case you want to run more complex simulations - but 768MB will be fine if you can't afford more.
For a hard drive, you need to consider the type of simulations you will be running. Steady state simulations don't need much disk space. Unsteady simulations often use lots and lots of disk space. I'd suggest a minimum of 40GB for an unsteady simulation and 80GB will be better. There are two major types of drives: SCSI and IDE. SCSI drives are extremely expensive but load small files much faster than IDE drives. Fluent data files are huge - thus SCSI drives offer little advantage. If you are on a budget get a 7200 rpm IDE drive.
For complex 3D pictures you might want to consider investing in a fast video card. If your simulations are simple or in 2D then don't spend much on a video card (get whatever is cheapest). Honestly the best speed and value is in gaming cards - Geforce3 Ti 200 for a moderate budget or Geforce 4 (any model except the MX models) for a large budget. Expensive workstation cards no longer provide any speed advantage over these gaming cards.
I personally haven't run Fluent on Linux since it is free for universities on Win2k. However other people here show that Fluent speed is only affected by a few percent - get whichever you are more comfortable using. As far as I know, you get either a Windows version of Fluent or a Unix version - not both.
I don't do multiphase flow. Ask others on Fluent's multiphase limitations.

Thanks, Scott, info . you metioned here are very useful for me, I run unsteady flow by 3D VOF and DPM model,I will try to get best one such as 1.8GB P4,also I need provide sufficient info. to dept. of university and sponsor of project for applying new PC, THanks for your help.
