Can I run a Unix-license Fluent on my own PC?
 

Our school has a unix license of FLUENT. If I want to work from home, can I run it from my laptop (using my own CPU), instead of runing X-window? Thanks.

I am not sure whether I get this right...you're saying you want to run a file in a Unix version on a Windows format? Ain't gonna happen...I think. Unless I'm mistaken, Unix license can only be run on an X-window. But you can try it though...see what happens. Also, you do know that you need to regidter with your department as one of the active users before you can open it at home or on another PC, right?

Yes you can use the Unix license on your windows PC, as soon as you have the license file on your computer!

I thought I understand the question but now I'm not too sure. From my friend's experience, she cannot run her simulation from a unix based to a windows based. The license used by both computers have to be compatible. I had a problem running older versions of v5 with a new v5 license and both are on the same platform (NT)! And Unix has to run on X window unless there's something like Exceed for Gambit that enables Windows to run a Unix program because Exceed bridges the gap between the two different platforms.

So my advice is: Make sure you have the same platform (for both your work PC and laptop), make sure the license is compatible i.e. use the same license, register your laptop as one of the active users in your faculty.

You can check it out with your CFD person in charge near your region.

I think Li does not want to use the UNIX executable under Windows but he just wants to use the license owned by his school?

It might be possible if you , Li, are connected to your school and work online like you were logged in the local network of your school. In this case you only have to copy the original license file to your local fluent installation (on your laptop). Maybe you have to change the server name into its IP-address.

But you have to be online (and pay the telephone bill). Otherwise the license server may cause difficulties.

I must admit that, even though I have the opportunity to log in the network of our company, I did not achieve yet to establish a working connection to the license server which allows me to run fluent on my PC at home.

In that case, yep. You can run it just about anywhere on PC or laptop if you're connected to the server in your department and the computer you're using has sufficient capability to run Fluent. Good luck!
