deforming mesh

I tried to do the tutorial 15 of FLUENT 4 (valve) under FLUENT 5.4. I couldn't find the deforming mesh function in FLUENT 5.4 So I couldn't do it. It is a pity because my problem resmbles very much this tutorial.
Has anyone been through this kind of problem? Does anyone know if the deforming mesh function is available in FLUENT 5.4? How to find it? |

FLUENT 4 uses structured grids and has the function to handle deformed mesh while FLUENT 5 can handle both structured and unstructured grids but it doesn't have the function to solve the deforming meshes problem. As far as I know, only FLUENT 4 can handle your problem. Before you solve your problem, you also need to determine the initial, intermediate, and the final grids for your problem. For unstructured grids, it is difficult to do it.

I have the same problem!! I know that the moving and deforming mesh feature is added in FLUENT6.0. But i can't use and can't find any example. if i find, i will let you know. Would you like to give me a copy of the tut15 of fluent4 ? i don't have it. thank you in advance. bonny |

Thank you for your answers. Does it mean that I won't be able to model my problem with fluent 5.4? I hope not!

Why dont you ask the fluent support. You have to contact them anyway since moving mesh is a beta feature in fluent 6 and not available without a special license key or something like this. It was also mentioned in this forum that you have to sign a non disclosure agreement for that.

Actually you have to sign a NDA if you use fluent 6.0.12 (cd version). If you use 6.0.20 (from FLUENT website), you don't have to sign a NDA but you need a special licence.
For your question, you have the choice to use Fluent 4.x (if the grid movement is known a priori or Fluent 6.0 where you can modifiy the grid movement via a UDF) |

my problem is that the computational domain is moving and deforming at the same time. Could I solve it using fluent4? or fluent6.? thanks anyway

With Fluent 4 you can certainly do it but the motion must be known by advance in order to generate the mesh files (inital - intermediate(s) - final).
With Fluent 6, I don't know whether you can manage deforming boundaries. The mesh itself can be deformed but what about the boundaries ? It certainly depends on the applcation you are simulating. I hope it will help you. |

my problem is a blade moving just at the top of a resin. So I have to study the interaction between this resin,the blade and the air. (a bulge ahead of the blade) Is it possible to solve something like this with fluent4?

my problem is that the computational domain is bounded by a fixed curve, a moving curve and two apex. because the "squish motion" of the moving curve , the domain is decreasing with time. and the domain is at different position. the fixed curve and moving curve are both different shape at different time. Could this problem be solved using fluent4? would you like to give any advice on BC setting? the domain is a closed volume, so there is no inlet and oulet. |

I think so (at a first glance). Maybe other users in this domain can comment this. This is a 2 phase-flow problem with moving boundary. I think the poppet valve tutorial (Fluent 4) can help you.
