question on Anaerobic fermentation?

Hi, Is there anyone have some experience or ideas on the modeling of glucose fermentation in Fluent. It will be two phase since CO2 is produced, and there are glucose, cell, water and ethanol in the liquid mixture. what is the effect of CO2 on the fermentation process? How shall it be modeled? Is there any paper on this?

What is the cell volume fraction? If small, i.e. less than 1% you can probably model it as a species as you would the glucose, water and ethanol. The CO2 generation can be modelled using the DPM model, i.e. liquid phase reaction produce gas phase. Using the rates, you can calc the mass sink the liquid phase and initialize the DPM injection. You'll need to account for CO2 diffusion into or out of the bubble as it travels through the broth depending on the local concentration in the liquid, ie. partial pressures.
Reading material ------------------ UDF Users Guide Sections on the DPM macro I don't recall any paper specifically but try EI Compendex. You probably have access to this database through the Dartmouth library. |
