solid& fluid

hello, I got a few question: 1. fluent uses finite volume method for its analysis right? 2.if a solid like a rock is placed in a pipe flow, how do we set the fluent testing? Do we set the rock as a solid or do we delete the solid volume(rock) from the fluid volume? 3.is it ok that i do not create the pipe wall and only create the geometry of the fluid volume inside? mesh it & test.

thanks.

1. yes - take a look at manual 2. take a good look at manual 3. take a very good look at manual

Right, Fluent uses FVM. Unless you are going to solve conjugate heat transfer you do not need to model the solid. Similarly, you may not model the pipe thickness, you could specify thickness in the wall boundary condition window even if there is heat transfer across.

Hi

The answer to the second question depend of the objective your work, if you want to simmulate heat transfer from the fluid to the solid you must to specify the two phases (solid and fluid); if you only want to predicte the wake and other hydrodynamic phenomena of the flow you can substract the solid from the domain, thereby you specify only a fluid phase.

In regarding to the boundary conditions of the fluid phase I suggest that you read the Steady and unsteady laminar flow behind a circular cylinder available in Fluent suport technical documentation.

In addition if your goal is to predict the flow limited by a pipe I suggest that you read the work of Chen XQ, Renksizbulut M, Li xianguo, Part. Part. Syst. Charact. 18, 2001, 120-133.
