Default identification of a face number

Is it possiable to identify a face number, and possibaly its thread from the spatial location. For example: if I know a face_t f1 can I find the face_t f2 that is exactly 3mm below f1?

I am trying to mimic a "coupling variable" that is avaliable in FEMLAB
